It’s probably not what you think.
When the concept of mental health first came on the scene, it suffered from heavy stigma – only the severely disturbed would even consider visiting a psychologist. Society at large characterized any mental health struggle as taboo – even shameful.
Most psychiatric “care” came strictly in the form of prescription medication – a majority of the public viewing mental health as a dubious offshoot of the larger body of medicine.
To give people the help they needed, mental health professionals adapted their locations’ physical spaces to be sensitive to this stigma and foster much-needed trust and safety between client and practitioner. They constructed anonymized office buildings with separate entrances and exits, and installed white noise machines to hinder accidental eavesdropping.
Even now, this vital field is just beginning to dispel common misapprehensions and get the respect it deserves, but coaching takes us to yet another dimension.
Coaching is a different animal entirely.
A coaching session is less like a therapy session and more like a vibrant brainstorming session.
Intensely action-oriented, dynamic, and exciting, it has more in common with a high-level physical training session. Only, in this case, the training, improvement, and excellence occur in your everyday life!
Undoubtedly, coaches and clients still cover sensitive topics. Intense emotions still regularly manifest – both tears and profanity are commonplace. But the nature of coaching lends itself more effectively to a different setting.
While we continue to uphold strict confidentiality, meeting virtually enhances coaching’s tangible results: follow-up projects, practice areas, and transformational action.
In short, meeting in a clinical setting is ideal for addressing mental health problems – healing, playing “defense,” and unpacking past wounds and pain require a uniquely compartmentalized setting.
But coaching happens right smack in the middle of the rest of your life!!!
It’s the perfect combination.
Coaching is uniquely suited for virtual, remote sessions because it allows seamless integration of our work during your session into your professional, personal, creative, or even spiritual life.
Coaching isn’t about “fixing” problems – it’s about taking these areas of your life to the next level!
